Gloria Moss BA (Hons), MA, PhD, FCIPD

Gloria Moss PhD, Professor of Management and Marketing at Buckinghamshire New University, Visiting Prof Paris School of Business and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (FCIPD).  She has a background as a Training and Development Manager for Courtaulds and Eurotunnel, having studied Human Resources at the London School of Economics (LSE) and before that obtaining a degree in French and a Masters in History.

Her research investigates the impact of segmentation variables (nationality, gender, age and personality) on behaviour and preferences in the areas of: leadership, teamwork, design and advertising.   She has applied her knowledge with clients that include Marks & Spencer, British Telecom, Canon Cameras, O2, Ford, Allen and Ovary, Bounty and Directski and she has offered a mixture of workshops (on unconscious bias; and on Mars and Venus in the Marketing suite), HR consultancy (factors impeding female movement through the talent pipeline in a Magic Circle law firm and advice onleadership competences) and marketing consultancy (eg optimizing design of car and travel websites for markets of women). In autumn 2015, she started to lead a funded project for the Employers Network on Employability and Inclusion (enei) on Inclusive Leadership, surveying and interviewing 15 large public and private sector organisations on the extent to which Inclusive Leadership is practiced and the impact of current leadership styles on strategy.  She is also leading a project for the Association of Professional Sales (APS) on children’s attitudes to sales and the sales profession.

A further interest, flowing from her career in Training and Development, is developing projects in which University students receive funding to help under-achieving children in schools in Maths, the native language and Social Enterprise.   There are armies of students that could be helping to maximize children’s potential and, after some very successful international projects funded by the EU, Gloria is seeking funding to extend the project across Europe.

In addition Gloria is a regular keynote speaker at practitioner conferences, for example at the Global Diversity and Inclusion conference in Barcelona in 2013 and at JUMP conferences in 2015 in Brussels and Paris focused on the Female Economy.  JUMP is an initiative aimed at advancing gender equality at work and Gloria’s research suggests that unconscious bias in unwritten success criteria, together with structural obstacles, are at the root of many of the obstacles facing women.  In October 2015, she will be giving a lecture at the Royal Academy Fine Arts School in London.

She is the author of c.70 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers and is a regular contributor to Management Today, HR Magazine and The Telegraph.  Her books include Gender, Design and Marketing (2009), Profiting from Diversity, (2010), Lessons on Profiting from Diversity (2012), the last two published by Palgrave Macmillan and Why men like straight lines and women like polka dots (2014).  This last book, like her book Gender, Design and Marketing (2009), presents copious evidence for systematic differences in male and female visual creations and preferences.

She writes regularly on management, marketing and Diversity issues for newspapers and magazine, for example Management Today, Personnel Today and HR Magazine.   Links to a small selection of these articles appear below her contact details.
